It has never been a secret by Google, that they index their users email and use it for advertising and other things. So I decided to take a look at Gmail, but this also applies to all the other big companies and their email services like Outlook, Yahoo and icloud etc.
I didn't really have to research this one, as I have known about ProtonMail ever since they started their Kickstarter campaign and I was in the beta testing of their secure email serivice. ProtonMail has a free plan that has 500MB storage (fine if you keep your inbox clean) and you are limited to 150 emails per day, for most this is not an issue. But the important part here is that ProtonMail is a secure email service, encrypting your entire inbox and everything else, and only you can decrypt the inbox with your key (password), none has access to the email account but you. This also means that if you forget your password you cannot reset it, unless your password hint reminds you of your password, worst case access is lost to the email account. The entire project is OpenSource, so there are no hidden backdoors in it as all source code is publicly available. The way ProtonMail works when you send email, is to use OpenPGP to encrypt the email you send to other Protonmail users, this is a secure way of using email and 3rd parties can't read your email. If you send an email to users of another email server, you can password protect the email you send, and it will expire after 28 days, unless you change the timer to the desired amount of time. This services does not use advertisement, but donations and payments, so you can pay to get a ProtonMail plus account for 4 euro a month if you pay annually, otherwise its 5 euro per month. The default plus account will give you:
- 5GB data (500MB for free account)
- 1 Custom domain (None for free account)
- 1000 Messages per day (100 per day for free account)
- 200 Labels (20 Labels for free account)
- Custom Email Filters (None for free account)
You can also customize the plus account to your likings and needs. It's a great project to give money to as they don't track their users, don't use advertisement.
As a bonus they also have an smartphone email client for Android and iOS, so you can access your email on the go.
